Bacardí Bar

Services Provided

+ New Branding System + Bottle Redesign + Promo Posters + Branded Bar

Brief

Rework the current packaging of a product while integrating materiality, 2D surface, and 3D volume. Develop own imagery and/or type, play with different textures, and work with an asymmetrical layout.

Challenge

Come up with a different packaging concept for Bacardí’s pint bottle to bring forward the important elements of the drink, figure out what is distracting in their current packaging, and cleaning it up to give Bacardí an elegant brand lift.

Results

Created an elegant bottle design using colored sandblasted sections to differentiate the wide range of flavors Bacardí offers as a system, while also simplifying the amount of information Bacardí displays.

Process

Preliminary Sketches

I had picked out a squared-off version of the Bormioli Rocco Swing Bottle because it offered a way to tell a story on the four panels of the bottle. I began sketching with the idea of creating a billboard effect on the bottle so it could be displayed with the corner facing out. The idea of sandblasting occurred to me and tried to see what I could do with blocking out color with that process. (Click images for full-size)

Layout Mockups

I chose what I thought were the two best layouts and began to mock them up with paper first then, I landed on the one on the left to move forward and started to sandblast and apply the necessary copy to see what it would look like in the wild.

The Bacardí System

Covering a Range of Flavors

After I finalized the Bacardí Limón bottle redesign, I wanted to see what this system would look like with a couple of their other fruit-infused rums. This design elevates the Bacardí name with a look that stands out on the shelf, and in the consumer’s home, with the partial flood of color and a structured grid for the elements.

Exhibition

A fully-realized branded bar experience.

Held in MSU’s Kresge Art Center Gallery, my group BFA exhibition was based around the idea of a design city. We all had our own things we wanted to showcase, but the items varied from person to person and each person had one big project that would be the focal point of their display.

For my display, I expanded upon my Bacardi system and transformed it into a branded bar, complete with three sets of bottles, shot glasses, promo posters, and vinyl lettering to mimic the labels.

Thank you Sara Seryani for taking photos of my display!
