Brief
Create a 12-month calendar using a non-traditional layout, and is not used for scheduling/marking down appointments. Theme of calendar is chosen at the designer’s discretion.
Challenge
Create a unique calendar using type as image, typographic personality, and typographic systems in tandem to approach the non-traditional calendar.
Results
Compiled a calendar involving music relevant to myself, while using a simple layout with an influence of art from the pop-art art movement.
Process
Research
I always go for extraordinary designs, and I associate that with the pop-art art movement. After doing some digging on pop-artists, I landed on Corita Kent and fell in love with her use of vibrant colors, bold type, and somewhat geometric shapes. I also found Robert Rauschenberg who was a precursor to the pop-art movement. His use of overlaying images into blocks of color help create texture and interest.

Laying Elements Out
Highlighting the first half of the month name made the most sense to establish a clear theme for the page, which is surrounded by a color block with an image of an album cover that I associate with that month. I turned it into a half tone to create texture, and to push It further into the background. Pairing the bold sans serif type with the classic serif helps create a nice contrast in tones, and set in sort of an optical illusion format.
Calendar System
After I got January all set, all of the other months fell into place. Colors that I associate with the months, as well as music that I relate with the months, make the whole calendar come to life.
